News: Bonnie Bird Awards

At Laban on 24 November 2004 the annual Bonnie Bird Choreography Fund awards were presented by Lea Anderson, Artistic Director of The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs.

Lea Anderson, herself an award winner in 1984, explained what the award meant to her, “It’s so surprising and exhilarating to think people believe in you, it had an amazing impact on me.”

The Fund aims to encourage the development of choreographers or dance writers in the early stages of their career. Previous winners include: Lea Anderson, Maresa von Stockert, Darren Johnston, Kwesi Johnson, Mark Baldwin, Matthew Bourne, and Rosemary Lee.

A little bit about this year’s winners:

Thomas Small **Thomas trained at Dundee College (Scottish School of Contemporary Dance) and London Contemporary Dance School. Since graduating Thomas has choreographed seven works for his company Smallpetiklein.

Kirsty Tapp
A student of both the London Contemporary Dance School and Laban, for the past ten years Kirsty has worked extensively as a freelance choreographer with both professional dancers and in education.

Dylan Quinn **Born in Northern Ireland Dylan has been working as a professional dance artist for over ten years and has worked as a choreographer, dancer and teacher. He intends to tour a new solo work in late 2005.

Rashpal Singh Bansal
Since finishing his training at London Contemporary Dance School, Rashpal has been working to develop his company United Dance Artists. He has also been commissioned to make works by companies such as The Place and Royal Opera House.

Marguerite Caruana Galizia
Since graduating last year from London Contemporary Dance School with a first class honours degree, Marguerite has been working on various choreographic projects. She will be working with Caroline Salem under the Marion North Mentoring Scheme.

Katie Phillips
A former competitive gymnast, Katie graduated with a BA in Dance Studies and English Literature from University of Surrey, Roehampton. She has worked for ‘City Weekend magazine’ in China and at The Place in Artist Development. Katie currently works for ‘The Stage’.

Crystal Pite
Based in Vancouver with the Ballet British Columbia and Ballet Frankfurt from 1988 until 2001 Crystal performed world-wide in works by more than thirty choreographers. In 2001 Crystal returned to Canada where she formed her own company Kidd Pivot and continues to choreograph and perform in her own work.

Thomas Lehman
German born Thomas trained at the School of New Dance Development in Amsterdam. His works include Clever a commission of Dance Northwest and the University of Lancaster.
