The best British musical ever? Critical and audience opinion is unanimously

‘A sub-Broadway sentimentality can easily slip and slither into musicals,
transforming them into escape-hatches for people tired of truth. But we are
genuinely stirred only when what’s tough, what’s raw, what’s significant and
serious finds its way into the dialogue, song and dance. Is there a British
musical other than Billy Elliot of which that’s fully the case? Can’t think of
