News: Big Dance - London

Monday 24 April 2006

After around 10,000 people packed out Move it Dance London at Olympia this weekend, the Mayor is encouraging Londoners to get dancing this summer.

Everyone with an interest in dance, schools, sports clubs and com community groups are invited to get involved in the*Big Dance*, a week of events and activities in July being led by the Mayor of London, aimed at promoting dance and encouraging people to get dancing.

The week long celebration of dance will begin on Monday 15 July, building to a weekend of special events in Trafalgar Square. (22-23 July)

Whatever their age, aptitude or ability, Londoners will be able to watch, or take part in events and workshops across the capital, including ballroom dancing, ballet, classical, jazz – plus activities bringing together dance and sport.

The idea is to involve as wide a range of organisations as possible, including: local dance classes; schools; community centres; sports and health clubs; theatres and cinemas, nightclubs; and retail outlets.

The Mayor, who is working with Visit London, Arts Council England, Sport England and the BBC, said:

‘Dancing brings people together and cuts across cultures. It’s also a great way to get active, to keep fit and healthy. Big Dance is for people of all ages and abilities and we want the largest number of Londoners getting out to dance this July.’

The Big Dance will also be happening across the UK and a selection of events will be shown on the BBC network.
