LA Dance Project

Benjamin Millepied’s company LA Dance Project, founded last year, makes its UK debut at the Edinburgh Festival later this month (24 August) – and comes to London in October (Sadler’s Wells, 2 – 4 October). From 1995 -2011 he danced with New York City Ballet –and in October 2014 he will become Artistic Director of Paris Opera Ballet.

His public profile rose dramatically when he worked on Darren Aronofsky’s horror film Black Swan -and became romantically involved with (and later marrying) Natalie Portman.

The programme Millepied brings to Edinburgh (and London) is an indication of his taste: a new piece of his own, with music by one of LA Dance Project’s co-founders, Nico Muhly; Merce Cunningham’s Winterbranch and William Forsythe’s Quintett.

For future performances he is also commissioning new work from choreographers Justin Peck (which will be seen in London) and Emanuel Gat.

‘We’ve made extraordinary progress. People in Europe are programming us because they think the quality is high enough and that means that although we are small we might be first rate.’ He tells Sarah Crompton in the Telegraph. Read the full interview
