The BBC has just launched the search for the next BBC Young Dancer 2017.

Young dancers (aged 16 – 25) are invited to apply in four categories: ballet, contemporary, South Asian and street dance, before the closing date of 22 July. The winner from each category and up to two wild cards will earn a place in the Grand Final at Sadler’s Wells, which will be televised live on BBC Two. The Grand Final will be judged by a leading panel of dance experts, to be announced soon.

Last year’s winner was 17 year old contemporary dancer Connor Scott, (pictured) from Blyth, Northumberland. He’s now in London, studying dance at the Rambert School. “Without a doubt, since the competition it has been a whirlwind of a year which has opened up some amazing opportunities for me,” he told us in a Q&A interview earlier this year.

For Vidya Patel, also a Finalist in 2015, taking part in the competition was a life changing experience. Like Connor, she danced again at Sadler’s Wells in Sadler’s Sampled earlier this year. She also worked with choreographer Richard Alston on his widely admired new work, An Italian In Madrid .
