Wednesday 18 June 2014 by Lucie Sheppard

The BBC has just announced a new initiative – Ten Pieces – for primary schools led by BBC Learning and the BBC Performing Groups, focusing on classical music and creativity.

Ten Pieces aims to open up the world of classical music to children – and inspire them to develop their own creative responses to the pieces through music, dance or digital art.

The project will launch in the autumn with special free screenings for schools in cinemas across the country of a film introducing ten pieces of classical music ranging from baroque to contemporary. Children will be asked to respond creatively to the music through their own compositions, dance, digital art or animation.

There will be dozens of Ten Pieces Champions supporting the initiative at a local level, including Music Education Hubs, Music Services and specialist music, dance and arts organisations.
