Over 200 people hit the floor of the Clore Ballroom on Saturday to learn a special group dance number for the Bollywood Big Dance as part of Southbank Centre’s Alchemy festival. Led by British dance artist Honey Kalaria, dozens of dance enthusiasts of all ages came to try their hands – and hips – at a lively, bhangra-flavoured routine featuring brightly coloured scarves and lots of shimmying.

The routine was simple enough for young dancers and those new to Bollywood to pick up in 45 energetic minutes, following which the crowd headed out into the decidedly non-tropical British weather to perform for a film crew and a host of surprised onlookers.

Despite grey clouds and a steady shower of rain, the Big Dancers accessorised their Bollywood smiles with stiff upper lips and performed three times to get the dance item filmed and in the can. The routine will be part of Alchemy’s 2013 Bollywood blockbuster movie in a week, being made with Alchemy participants throughout the week, scripted by poet and performer Shane Solanki, with original music.

The finished film will be screened on Sunday 21 April at 4.30pm in the Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall.
