As the National Youth Dance Company start the next round of recruiting talented young dancers from across the UK to join their ranks in September, another new company member has been announced: Akram Khan is to follow Jasmin Vardimon as their next Guest Artistic Choreographer.

The award winning dancer and choreographer is one of the most influential artists working in dance today – and last year he was seen by a world wide audience of millions when he performed in the London 2012 Olympics opening ceremony. “I thoroughly enjoy working with young people who have passion and ambition so I am really looking forward to being the next guest artistic director for the National Youth Dance Company”, he said as the appointment was announced last week. “The positive role of the arts in our society is fundamental in providing young people with the skills they need to succeed in any walk of life. Having dance recognised by the setting up of this company is a real achievement for the industry as it presents a fantastic opportunity to nurture the next generation of artists and inspire a host of young people to get involved. I’m honoured to be involved in this project.”

The company made their debut performance in in between Jasmin Vardimon’s new work created with and for them – at Sadler’s Wells in May, and they will be performing it again as part of Sadler’s Sampled this weekend (28 & 29 June).

NYDC is based at the UK’s leading dance house Sadler’s Wells in London and company members get the chance to work with a range of inspirational teachers and choreographers to learn, make and perform original work, using a number of dance techniques including contemporary, hip hop, ballet and south Asian dance.

Any young dancers (aged 16 – 18) who would like to join NYDC are invited to take part in Experience Workshops taking place across the whole of the UK in the next few weeks, with the first taking place in London this Saturday (29 June) and Ashford, Kent on Sunday (30 June). Places on the workshop are free, but must be reserved by emailing The workshop days include teaching on technique and creative elements, as well as an information sessions about safe practice in the studio, potential careers in dance and NYDC. Choreographer Jasmin Vardimon is full of praise for the achievements of this year’s NYDC’s members “This young group have fresh energy, enthusiasm and the capacity to soak up information very fast and I’m very proud of the level they have achieved in such a short amount of time,” she said. “I’m glad that they will be working with Akram next year, which no doubt will be a wonderful experience and an opportunity for them to develop the skills they’ve gained this year and grow further as all-round performers.”
