Akademi, the South Asian dance organisation have been selected to to take part in Parliament’s Olympic arts initiative, a series of events and performances taking place in and around Westminster this summer. Arts in Parliament is part of the Cultural Olympiad and includes a range of arts organisations from across the UK. Akademi are the only dance organisation to have been chosen.

Artistic Director Mira Kaushik said “It is a tremendous honour to be representing UK dance at this wonderful initiative. In 2012 London will become the focal point for a great cultural exchange, and it is these values that are central to the ethos of Akademi. The two new pieces we will be devising will have at their heart Akademi’s commitment to pioneering new visions of dance performance in new spaces, celebrating the cultural variety of London and using dance as a vehicle for social change.”

Akademi’s first piece, on 6 July in Westminster Hall will include a substantial ensemble cast, interactive elements and video projections and looks set to be one of the organisation’s most ambitious productions to date. The second work on 10 August will involve many participants from community organisations in which Akademi plays a crucial role.
