From Sydney Opera House to the South Bank Centre
Michael Lynch, Chief Executive of Sydney Opera House, has been appointed Chief Executive of the South Bank Centre (Royal Festival Hall and Hayward Gallery). He takes up his appointment in September.

Lord Hollick, Chairman of SBC said: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Lynch as the Chief Executive of SBC. He is just the man for the job. He has a formidable international reputation in arts administration, as an inspired leader of Australia’s national arts centre, the Sydney Opera House, and previously a much-respected head of the Australia Council (the Australian equivalent of the Arts Council).

“This is a particularly challenging time as we begin the major renovation and redevelopment of the whole 30-acre site. Michael’s commitment to the arts, his management expertise and experience in managing capital projects will be invaluable. By the time he arrives in September we expect to have announced our plans for the major refurbishment of the Royal Festival Hall and a number of other important development projects at the South Bank.”

Michael Lynch said: “I am thrilled to have been appointed to lead SBC in the next crucial stage of its development. This is potentially the world’s greatest arts centre, attracting the very best artists and performers. The Royal Festival Hall was the inspiration for the Sydney Opera House. I look forward to working with the South Bank team. We have exciting challenges ahead”

The Independent’s Kathy Marks reports from Sydney:
Michael Lynch has been a popular and outspoken chief executive of the Sydney Opera House, Australia’s premier performing arts venue as well as an architectural icon.

He is widely admired for the blend of creativity and realism that he has brought to the Opera House over the past four years. Mr Lynch is a passionate advocate of the arts, fond of loud shirts and horse racing, and once played a bare-chested hippie in a movie.
