Interview: Matthew Bourne’s Sleeping Beauty

Matthew Bourne explains how he’s turned Sleeping Beauty from, what he considers, quite an uninteresting and uneventful story into a dramatic and dynamic tale.

“In Bourne’s hands, Sleeping Beauty will become a gothic fairytale for the 21st century, where the Princess will wake up in 2011 — and not fall in love at first sight. “She’s a free spirit, a wild child.” In fact, Princess Aurora’s romantic interest is not a prince but the royal gamekeeper.”
