Kloe Dean is a London based hip hop dancer, choreographer, freestyler and teacher. She is part of Boy Blue Entertainment and has performed in numerous showcases and competitions, with many music artists – and as part of the street dance show Blaze. At just 18 she formed the all female street dance collective Myself UK Dance Company, who will be performing a new work at this year’s Breakin’ Convention, the International Festival of Hip Hop Dance Theatre at Sadler’s Wells. We grabbed a few moments with her…

Tell us about starting Myself UK Dance Company…
I started the company as I felt that women within dance, especially within the hip hop/street dance scene, were under-represented as being strong females independently as well as collectively. I think women are extremely undervalued. It is frustrating but I think it is a great fuel to fire a motivating power to just become more powerful as women and support each other more so! Men and women together!

Your new piece, Red will be performed at Breakin’ Convention this year, tell us about it..
It looks at the possible positive power and impact of women supporting other women. It is a journey of emotions fuelled with explosive energy, female fire and unique movement.

When did you decide you wanted to dance professionally?
I actually wanted to sing but more dance opportunities seemed to be coming my way consistently! And I was so inspired by what I kept seeing around me I just wanted to do more!

What has been the stand out moment in your career to date?
I’ve had loads – performing in the Sydney Opera House was quite surreal. And definitely dancing in the London 2012 Olympic opening ceremonies!

London is sometimes referred to as ‘the dance capital of the world’ – do you agree with that? What would make it better to work in?
I think London is definitely a hub of dance accessed by everyone worldwide! It would be great to have more free, regularly accessible rehearsal and training dance space here. I really would love to create a space or building just for hip hop and urban dance, I really don’t think there is anywhere dedicated to this style. Everywhere that we have to use has been originally made for classical or contemporary styles!

What do you enjoy most about performing at Breakin’ Convention?
I love and I am very grateful for the amazing platform at Breakin’ Convention, the opportunity to perform alongside amazing international dance acts, and be inspired but what other people bring to the stage. We are blessed in London to be able to have such a great opportunity to showcase our work and style in a world renowned venue with an amazing audience!

What’s next for Myself UK Dance Company?
We will be developing Red (the piece we are performing at Breakin’ Convention). We hope to extend it and perform it internationally in the near future. We will soon be doing a collaboration with jazz dance company BOP, with the amazing Dollie Henry, fusing jazz and hip hop to create a piece which we’ll be performed in the summer. We will also be competing in The Hot Stepper dance competition and Street Dance XXL!

Kloe Dean and Myself UK Dance Company are performing on Saturday at Breakin’ Convention, Sadler’s Wells, 30 April – 2 May
