Cunningham made Ocean in 1994. Atlas’s film captures one of the most dramatic stagings of the production – 150 feet below ground on the floor of the Rainbow Granite Quarry in Waite Park, Minnesota in 2008. 150 musicians, including the St. Cloud Symphony Orchestra, perform an orchestral score by Andrew Culver (inspired by John Cage) and an electronic score by long-time Cunningham collaborator David Tudor. Performed in the round, the musicians encircle the audience, which, in turn, encircles the dance. 4,500 audience members were at the event, which Cunningham said was one of the highlights of his sixty year career.
Ocean was last performed in London as part of Dance Umbrella 2006 at the Roundhouse.
