Ten minutes into Ben Wright’s latest full-evening piece, Just As We Are, the performance was stopped due one of the dancers sustaining a back injury.

Luke Jennings reflects on the high risk of injury that professional dancers face. Is this something that should just be accepted as part of the job, or is there something that can be done to reduce the likelihood of physical strain and injury?

‘Dance is risk. It’s live performance, authentic and occasionally dangerous. But there is a pressing need, as the Wolverhampton report concludes, “to introduce interventions to reduce the risk of injury in professional dancers”.’
