Zenaida Yanowsky & Tommy Franzen in Kim Brandstrup's 'Leda and the Swan'

Choreographer and director Kim Brandstrup’s dramatic short film Leda and the Swan , which was commissioned by The Royal Ballet for Deloitte Ignite 2014, is now available to watch online.

The eight minute work features the Royal Ballet’s Zenaida Yanowsky and hip hop star Tommy Franzen. Brandstrup’s lyrical choreography is married with Yeats’s poetry – read by actor Fiona Shaw – and Nico Muhly’s taut, urgent music for string quartet, to tell two opposing versions of the story of Leda and the Swan. The film is produced by Lucie Conrad with cinematography by Stephen Standen.

“The camerawork is close, the combination of Yanowsky’s long form and Franzen’s compact dynamism is explosive.” Read more of Siobhan Murphy’s review for londondance.com here

Brandstrup’s latest work for the Royal Ballet features in a triple bill which opens on Friday 7 November. Ceremony of Innocence is inspired by Benjamin Britten and created for dancers of The Royal Ballet in the composer’s centenary year. Christopher Wheeldon’s award winning Aeternum and The Age of Anxiety a new work by Liam Scarlett are also part of the programme. More in our listings
