Feature: Dance Teaching Essentials press release

Friday 7 April 2006

A new publication from Dance UK and partners was launched at The Place, London recently, in the presence of Tessa Blackstone, Minister of State for the Arts.

Dance Teaching Essentials is a major step forward in promoting high quality dance teaching and is the first publication of its kind. It celebrates the diversity of dance experiences available to young people and establishes connections between the teaching that takes place in schools, the graded examinations provided by studio teachers, vocational dance training and the projects and performances on offer in community settings. Dance Teaching Essentials marks the fact that a common understanding about good practice is emerging across all kinds of dance teaching.

Compiled and written by a group encompassing expertise in a wide range of dance teaching contexts, Dance Teaching Essentials demonstrates the benefits of working in partnership. The group included specialists from Arts Educational School, Tring Park, Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Council for Dance Education and Training, Dance UK, the Foundation for Community Dance, Learning and Access at The Place, and the National Dance Teachers Association. Contributions were made by the Association of Dance of the African Diaspora, the Arts Councils of England and Scotland, and a wide range of dance artists, teachers and students from across the UK.

Dance Teaching Essentials brings together essential information that all dance teachers need whatever style of dance they teach. It includes sections on how young people grow and learn, safe practice, the legal framework that dance teachers work within, planning and teaching strategies, qualifications and professional development. There are lots examples of dance teaching in practice including in schools and studios, international choreographic projects, and dance as an aid to learning. The resources section includes summaries of physical, psychological and emotional development, physical disabilities and learning difficulties, questions that parents might ask and risk assessment.

The production of Dance Teaching Essentials has been supported by the Regional Arts Lottery Programme through London Arts.
