Christmas presents with a dance theme 2013

We’re in to serious countdown time for present buying now, so if you’re looking for some inspiration, here’s a few suggestions with a dance theme…

A couple of beautiful photography books to start off with: Andrej Uspenski’s latest study of fellow Royal Ballet Artist Natalia Osipova as she prepares to dance in Swan Lake. Becoming a Swan is an intimate portrait from his exclusive vantage point as a First Artist with the company and has over 150 black and white images of Osipova behind the scenes and on stage, including unique glimpses taken from the wings at Covent Garden.
RRP £14.99 Oberon Books

Or how about Dancers Among Us: A Celebration of Joy in the Everyday. Photographer Jordan Matter started his Dancers Among Us project by asking a member of the New York based Paul Taylor Dance Company to dance for him in a place where dance is unexpected. So, dressed in a commuter’s suit and tie, the dancer flew across a Times Square subway platform…
RRP £12.99 Amazon

It’s beginning to seem that a Strictly Come Dancing final is all part of the run up to Christmas, so if you’ve got a Strictly addict on your present list, how about this nostalgic collection of moments from past series of top picks from judges Len Goodman, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli. [We’d also like to see Arlene, Alesha & Darcey’s picks please]
RRP £5.99 BBC

Or how about the beautifully filmed DVD On Taking Care – which documents choreographer Rosemary Lee’s Dance Umbrella 2009 commission for Greenwich Dance’s Borough Hall – Common Dances. The two disc set includes a full version of the production (featuring over 120 performers, many drawn from the local community) along with interviews and rehearsal footage, exploring the themes of the piece and Lee’s unique working processes.
RRP £15.00 Arts Admin

Looking for something for the whole family to enjoy together? How about one of the Family Dance Workshops on offer from English National Ballet. Some are based around The Nutcracker but there are others to choose from running throughout the holiday period.
RRP £30 English National Ballet

Sarah Crompton’s book Sadler’s Wells Dance House is a fascinating record of the last ten years in the theatre’s history. It covers the transition from receiving to production house and the creation of many internationally acclaimed new works in dance forms from ballet to hip hop. Includes interviews with Sylvie Guillem, Akram Khan, Matthew Bourne, Hofesh Shechter and other Associate Artists.
RRP £20.00 Sadler’s Wells

Dance UK are offering a gift membership package – and a selection of useful books for students, teachers, choreographers and healthcare practictioners: www.danceuk.org

Finallly, for some fun, this insulated can holder will help you keep your cool during class or rehearsal; for the aspiring ballerina in the family some pink glittery ballet shoes and for the tree these nutcracker doll glass baubles caught my eye whilst I was browsing the Royal Academy of Dance’s site. I love retro baubles so I will be buying a couple of these for my tree.

If you’re still looking for inspiration, you can always browse our listed dance retailers for dance wear and more ideas.
