  1. Royal Ballet - La Bayadère - Royal Opera House

    Press Review 3Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 9 April - 22 May 2013

Núñez’s dancing is as irresistible as her acting, yet this star turn is contained within a full-company performance. Despite a few awkward wobbles, Bayadère is an engaging collective achievement, from Akane Takada’s hummingbird-bright solo in the second …

  2. Mikhailovsky Ballet - Triple Bill - London Coliseum

Press Review 4Lyndsey Winship, Evening Standard, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 7 April 2013

This final show, a triple bill of works by the Mikhailovsky’s artistic director, Nacho Duato, is a great showcase for the company’s elegant dancing.

    Graham Watts, Monday 8 April 2013 — Performance: 9 April - 22 May 2013

Roberta Marquez stood in at the last minute for the injured Alina Cojocaru - it could have been a disaster but ended as a spectacular triumph.  Continue Reading

  5. A String of Rites - unfurls this week

  6. Royal Ballet - La Bayadère - Royal Opera House

    Press Review 3Clement Crisp, Financial Times, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 9 April - 22 May 2013

But, as too often with our national ballet, the first night resembled a dress rehearsal. Ensembles looked frayed at the edges, flurried; characterisations went either too far or not far enough

  7. Mikhailovsky Ballet - Multiplicity. Forms of Silence & Emptiness - London Coliseum

    Press Review 3Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 5 - 6 April 2013

These aren’t ballet dancers who’ve been shoehorned into an alien, contemporary aesthetic – they inhabit Duato’s earthy, maverick choreography as if it had been bred as deeply in their bones as Petipa. If the integrity of the dancers never wavers, th…

  8. Royal Ballet - La Bayadère - Royal Opera House

    Press Review 3Mark Monahan, Telegraph, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 9 April - 22 May 2013

But the evening was royally stolen by the most fatale of all the Royal Ballet’s femmes, Marianela Nuñez. She plays Gamzatti as a cross between an exquisitely bejewelled stiletto and an odalisque from some irresistible ring of hell.

  9. balletLORENT - Rapunzel - Sadler's Wells

Press Review Louise Levene, Telegraph, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 29 -30 March 2013

The title alone was enough to pack Sadler’s Wells but it’s a grim tale made grimmer by the women’s page woes of Rapunzel’s childless parents and dragged down by slo-mo storytelling and a limited movement vocabulary.

  10. English National Ballet 2 - My First Cinderella - Peacock Theatre

Press Review Louise Levene, Telegraph, Monday 8 April 2013Performance 27 Mar - 7 April 2013

George Williamson’s stripped-down scenario was strongly danced and played by an attractive cast but the production is blighted by an aproned actress who busybodies about the stage stating the bleeding obvious.

  11. Sergei Polunin in promotional shot for 'Midnight Express'

Midnight Express and headline stars part company

    Sunday 7 April 2013

To lose one dancer mysteriously might perhaps be explained by his mental state - but to lose two? Graham Watts reflects on Polunin and Zelensky's departure from Peter Schaufuss' ballet, due to open at t… Continue Reading

  12. Mikhailovsky Ballet season - London Coliseum

Press Review Luke Jennings, Observer, Sunday 7 April 2013Performance April 2013

On Thursday a great silence settled over London’s dance world. For 10 days we’d been in the grip of Hurricane Natalia, and then suddenly she was gone and we were left dazedly trying to reshape our certainties.

  13. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Antony Gormley, monks from Shaolin Temple - Sutra - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 4Clement Crisp, Financial Times, Sunday 7 April 2013Performance 3 - 6 April 2013

We watch, we delight in the many and prodigious tricks of design that are produced with Gormley’s boxes and the physical resource of the monks, who leap and fly and fall and battle and create worlds, dramas, with the boxes.

  14. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Antony Gormley, monks from Shaolin Temple - Sutra - Sadler's Wells

    Graham Watts, Friday 5 April 2013 — Performance: 3 - 6 April 2013

Anyone remember the catchy emblem of ‘70s disco – Everybody was Kung-fu fighting? Well, these “funky China men” don’t hail from “funky Chinatown” but the Shaolin Temple by Songshan Mountain in Ch… Continue Reading

  15. Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Antony Gormley, monks from Shaolin Temple - Sutra - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 3Zoe Anderson, Independent, Thursday 4 April 2013Performance 3 - 6 April 2013

At its best, Sutra mixes Zen precision with exhilarating movement. Monks dash between the walls of the mazes, scamper over the top of tilting ramparts, brace themselves inside moving boxes or dash out of the way just in time. Creating the patterns, they become part of them.
