Stuttgart Ballet - Made in Germany - Sadler's Wells

    Graham Watts, Wednesday 20 November 2013 — Performance: 18 & 19 November 2013

These thirteen pieces were made by nine separate choreographers but they contained an internal triple bill of former Stuttgart director John Cranko’s work, appropriately more than from any other source.  Continue Reading

    Press Review 2Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Tuesday 19 November 2013Performance 18 & 19 November 2013

For the most part, this is an evening where it’s less the choreography you admire than Stuttgart’s dancers. Articulate, strong and diverse, they command an impressive depth of talent which I wish we could see more often over here.

  3. Showtime - for the Emerging Artist

    Tuesday 19 November 2013

Nats Nus Dansa - Mons - Lilian Baylis Studio Sadler's Wells

    Jeffrey Gordon Baker, Tuesday 19 November 2013 — Performance: 15 & 16 November 2013

'Mons' is a beautifully crafted work of contemporary dance that is both considerate of children’s preoccupations and sensibilities, but also structured to accommodate their attention spans.. Continue Reading

  6. Stuttgart Ballet - Made in Germany - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 3Lyndsey Winship, Evening Standard, Tuesday 19 November 2013Performance 18 & 19 November 2013

There are some gems in here, though. Especially Maria Eichwald and Evan McKie in a dreamy extract from Cranko’s enigmatically titled Initials R.B.M.E. (1972), where the tall but gentle McKie so delicately rotates Eichwald’s body it’s as if she’s a bubble he doesn…

  7. Stuttgart Ballet - Made in Germany - Sadler's Wells

Press Review Sarah Frater, The Stage, Tuesday 19 November 2013Performance 18 & 19 November 2013

Despite the pre-recorded music and plain stage, this is a neat idea, as the packed programme shows off the excellent dancers and demonstrates that the company has long been committed to new work – even if some is of variable quality.

  8. Stuttgart Ballet - Made in Germany - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 2Zoe Anderson, Independent, Tuesday 19 November 2013Performance 18 & 19 November 2013

German audiences must have more stamina. Stuttgart Ballet’s Made in Germany presents 13 works created for the company, including seven UK premieres. The dancers are strong and individual, but the evening becomes a slog – so many excerpts, so much whimsy, so many danc…

    Liang / Maliphant / Wheeldon - Fang-Yi Sheu & Yuan Yuan Tan - Sadler's Wells

    Josephine Leask, Monday 18 November 2013 — Performance: 14 - 16 November 2013

Maliphant’s 'Two x Two' captures the women at their best... both dynamic, independent forces, not delicate or reliant on a partner’s strength. Ballet and contemporary morph into one. Continue Reading

    Press Review 3Luke Jennings, Observer, Monday 18 November 2013Performance 9, 13, 19, 20, 23 November 2013

These choreographers and their muses, male and female, are united in their desire to push back the boundaries of their art form. But in so doing they’re adopting a physical language and a set of creative assumptions framed almost exclusively by men. Female choreo…

  11. Liang / Maliphant / Wheeldon - Fang-Yi Sheu & Yuan Yuan Tan - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 3Judith Mackrell, , Saturday 16 November 2013Performance 14 - 16 November 2013

…from the joyous concentration with which the two women dance together in their closing item, I suspect it was this, Maliphant’s Two x Two, that inspired the project.

Shanghai-born Yuan Yuan Tan and Taiwanese Fang-Yi Sheu are both extraordinary dancers and it is a welcome opportunity to see them in a series of pieces uncluttered by stage furniture or a surrounding ensemble.

  14. Wim Vandekeybus - Booty Looting - Queen Eilzabeth Hall

    Press Review 3Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Wednesday 13 November 2013Performance 12 & 13 November 2013

The performances are terrific – I love Kip Johnson’s anxious-son act, peering at life over the parapet of his own defences. And there’s a real element of dazzle in the variety of stories Vandekeybus manages to juggle.
