    Sarah Kent, Monday 25 April 2016 — Performance: 20 April - 7 May 2016

Among all the chaos, the most satisfying moments come when the performers join together to create a cacophony of farmyard sounds – mooing, clucking, bleating and grunting – and to sing... Continue Reading

    Press Review 4Bruce Dessau, Evening Standard, Monday 25 April 2016Performance 20 - 24 April 2016

Their bodies are their main building blocks and they use them tremendously effectively, at one point constructing vertiginous human towers.

  4. Balletboyz - Life - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 4Vanessa Keys, The Telegraph, Monday 25 April 2016Performance 20 - 24 April 2016

BalletBoyz are one of today’s genuine ensemble companies, and de Frutos has used their chemistry to his and their advantage, delivering choreography so effortless that it looks entirely improvised.

Afshin (Reece Ritchie) finds a band of like-minded creatives at university in Tehran and decides to ride the wave of political and social optimism that coincides with the 2009 election and form a dance company.

  7. Balletboyz - Life - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 4Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Friday 22 April 2016Performance 20 - 24 April 2016

The first of the two works, by Pontus Lidberg, makes me want to see everything that the choreographer has made. The second, by Javier De Frutos, is funnier than any dance I’ve seen in ages.

  9. Protein Dance - May Contain Food - The Place

    Press Review 3Lyndsey Winship, Evening Standard, Friday 22 April 2016Performance 20 April - 7 May 2016

It’s clever, witty stuff, with novel audience interaction (we watch from dinner tables set around the stage), but it doesn’t tell us things we don’t know; poignant moments are fleeting. Not life changing, but very palatable.

  10. Protein Dance - May Contain Food - The Place

    Press Review 4Neil Norman, The Stage, Friday 22 April 2016Performance 20 April - 7 May 2016

The devised quirkiness is calculated to provoke and promote self-interrogation even as it amuses and entertains.

    Press Review 4Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Friday 22 April 2016Performance 20 April - 7 May 2016

The cast are excellent, so multi-skilled that it’s often hard to distinguish singers from dancers. Gough’s a capella score is equally various, ranging from acerbic satire to a chorus of Balkan-sounding harmonies that evoke the ancient, ceremonial power of food.

It is rare to find extremes of grace and eccentricity in the same evening but the two works here deliver both in spades.
