    Sanjoy Roy, Wednesday 14 August 2013 — Performance: 10 August 2013

'Leaving home: being elsewhere' - It’s a composite title for a composite evening that began with a much-needed bunch of backstory. For this was no standard performance programme... Continue Reading

  2. Bolshoi Ballet - Jewels - Royal Opera House

    Press Review 4Clement Crisp, Financial Times, Wednesday 14 August 2013Performance 12 & 13 August 2013

But on Tuesday, after the Bolshoi Ballet showed us Jewels, I was prepared to hail Olga Smirnova’s performance in Diamonds – and no less so Semyon Chudin’s as her cavalier – as sublimely commanding, perfect.

    Press Review 4Sarah Crompton, Telegraph, Wednesday 14 August 2013Performance 12 & 13 August 2013

Anastasia Stashkevich – one of the real standouts of this season – used her gossamer daintiness to weave dreamy spells of wonder. She seemed to swim in the music as she walked backwards in a trance, beautifully supported by Dmitri Gudanov.

  6. Bolshoi Ballet - Jewels - Royal Opera House

    Press Review 4Lyndsey Winship, Evening Standard, Tuesday 13 August 2013Performance 12 & 13 August 2013

Possibly the best dancing of the evening comes from first soloist Anna Tikhomirova, playing second fiddle to the picture-perfect Evgenia Obraztsova in opening act Emeralds.

  7. Bolshoi Ballet - Jewels - Royal Opera House

    Press Review 4Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Tuesday 13 August 2013Performance 12 & 13 August 2013

It’s left to Olga Smirnova to vamp up the energy in Diamonds. Fabulously gifted, this young dancer is already proving a maverick – the singing line of her upper body punctuated by the odd, imperious accents of her phrasing.

  8. West Side Story - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 4Siobhan Murphy, Metro, Tuesday 13 August 2013Performance 7 Aug - 22 Sep 2013

the colourful fire of the gangs’ dance-off at the local ballroom and the wild celebratory dancing of America liven everything up.

Introducing Robyn Orlin - An Unorthodox Beauty

West Side Story - Sadler's Wells

    Lise Smith, Monday 12 August 2013 — Performance: 7 Aug - 22 Sep 2013

'West Side Story' remains absolutely top-drawer musical theatre. This touring cast can sing – and dance – most other West End productions off the stage, and all in the service of a narrative… Continue Reading

  11. Swan Lake Reloaded - London Coliseum

    Press Review Ruaridh Nicoll, Observer, Sunday 11 August 2013Performance 5 - 10 August 2013

The show drew a crowd of twentysomethings the like of which I have rarely seen at the ballet. Rydman is a star ascending. Swan Lake Reloaded showed a understanding of spectacle matched by a talent for storytelling.

  12. West Side Story - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 4Paul Taylor, Independent, Friday 9 August 2013Performance 7 Aug - 22 Sep 2013

Where the production hits the mark is in restoring a genuine edge of spontaneity and danger to Robbins’ testosterone-charged dance treatment of the gang warfare between the Jets and the Sharks.

  13. West Side Story - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 4Michael Billington, Guardian, Friday 9 August 2013Performance 7 Aug - 22 Sep 2013

The strength of this particular revival lies in the dancing. Joey McKneely seems content to reproduce Robbins’s original choreography as faithfully as possible: the dream-sequence ballet is particularly well done with the idealised, white-uniformed Jets and Shark…

  15. West Side Story - Sadler's Wells

    Press Review 3Simon Edge, Daily Express, Friday 9 August 2013Performance 7 Aug - 22 Sep 2013

I yearned to see a fresher take that might harness some of the street dance energy that bursts out of the TV talent shows nowadays and give this tale of rape and murder a real sense of danger. If that means breaking free of some of the licensing constraints, so be it.
