Nest is a more accessible introduction to immersive theatre, though both site-specific pieces put dance centre stage. Next year the Grade II-listed chapel will become a new arts centre, Stone Nest, but this, its first commission, is a terrific appetiser.

Bright ideas, impeccably achieved. If Diaghilev were alive today, what’s the betting he’d be doing things on development sites. Theatres are so last century.

    Press Review 3Jenny Gilbert, Independent, Saturday 20 July 2013Performance 16 -20 July 2013

The casting, too, was superb: the Bolshoi’s Mikhail Lobukhin, as a properly rugged Tsarevich, the Firebird (Alexandra Timofeeva), bold and wild.

    Press Review 2Zoe Anderson, Independent, Friday 19 July 2013Performance 16 -20 July 2013

Technical hitches aside, it was a ramshackle night of dubious revivals and recorded music. The bright spot was British-born guest star Xander Parish, dancing with bold conviction.

    Press Review 2Judith Mackrell, Guardian, Friday 19 July 2013Performance 16 -20 July 2013

Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes may have become a cultural legend, but the magic of its surviving repertory is fragile. It’s in danger of being rubbed away entirely by Andris Liepa and his Russian Seasons project.

    Press Review 3Neil Norman, Daily Express, Friday 19 July 2013Performance 16 -20 July 2013

Much is redeemed by Scheherazade. Everyone throws themselves into it with abandon, from Makhalina, exuding the overheated sex of a Sixties’ Italian movie starlet as Zobeide, to the buff Parish swashbuckling and sensual as The Golden Slave.

The number of leading ballet dancers who have come to see these performances shows the respect they have for the history of their art. Unlike paintings, we can’t simply gaze upon the 1910 originals, but L… Continue Reading
